About the Center

The Research Centre for Punjabi Language Technology formally known as Advanced Centre for Technical Development of Punjabi Language, Literature and Culture (ACTDPL) was established in February 2004 with the aim of conducting research and development in linguistic and computational aspects of Punjabi Language as well as to spread the usage of Punjabi on computers and internet.

Major Highlightes

For the first time, many path breaking technologies have been developed by the staff of the centre and research students. These include:

Significant Achievements

  • The Centre has been awarded three international research projects in open competitions held in 2005, 2008 and 2014, funded under Pan Asia Grants Singapore and ISIF grants Australia respectively.
  • Research and development projects worth around Rs. 3 crores, funded by seven funding agencies, have been bagged by the centre so far.
  • A multi-media based website for Punjabi teaching has been developed, which is one of the best language learning website for any language. Users from more than 155 countries including USA, Canada, UK, Pakistan etc. have been regularly visiting this website for learning Punjabi.
  • The Gurmukhi script OCR and Punjabi morphological analyser and generator developed by the staff of the centre were released by Thiru Dayanidhi Maran Hon'ble Union Minister of Communications and Information Technology in 2007 for mass distribution in the Punjabi CD launched by Ministry of Communications and Information Technology.
  • The centre has also developed a high accuracy Urdu/Hindi transliteration system, which can convert any Hindi website to Urdu and any Urdu website to Hindi. The transliteration technology is being used by IIIT Hyderabad for Urdu-Hindi MT System.
  • Collaborative workshop, "Workshop on Punjabi teaching materials for internet use", with University of California, Santa Barbara, USA in 2007 and 2008.
